How to Control Hunger When Trying to Lose Weight
We’ve all been there; you are all pumped to start a new diet program only to feel unbelievable hunger not long after you start. Most diets are successful because they dramatically cut back on your caloric intake. Well, the problem with this is when you start to dramatically cut back on your calories your body goes into a state of shock. Metabolically healthy individuals are able to cut their calories and not have as dire consequences because they are able to tap into their own body fat and use that as fuel. However, if you have been living a life that relies on a constant intake of food, and you cannot go a few hours without your blood sugar crashing than you are going to have a hard time losing weight. The key is metabolic flexibility. This is where your body can use either glucose or fat as a fuel source. If you consume carbohydrates than that will be used up first. When you slowly cut back on carbohydrates the body doesn’t freak out. This is one of the things that I learned when going through my own weight loss journey and having success. It’s this tapering approach that results in sustainable results. When you slowly start to cut out the processed, sugary, and inflammatory foods and replace them with whole foods the weight will start to come off. It is simple but not easy. This transformation takes time and in the beginning your microbiome consists of that which will crave sugary and processed foods but over time by adding in more whole foods your microbiome will start to change and the intense cravings for those foods will subside. Of course you will want to move your body daily too. You will feel better and the more energy you expend the more energy you will have down the road. If you can slowly start lowering the amount of carbohydrates, you are consuming and replace that with healthy fats and protein you will start to retrain the body on how to use fat as fuel. This is the way that our bodies are designed to function, and this is how we were born but over time with the horrible diets that we consume our bodies have forgotten how to use fat as fuel and we store it instead.
